This is one of the most revolutionary games on the Sega Genesis. It's one of the best selling games on the Genesis/Megadrive as well. Whats this game? Sonic The Hedgehog 2. Originally out in 1992, it sent the Sonic series to much more popularity, and is still the favorite Sonic game to alot of people, even if it is outdated.

What Sonic The Hedgehog 2 did was first, add a sidekick, Miles "Tails" Prower, or as most people know him as Tails the two tailed fox. Making the well known pair of Sonic and Tails, just like Mario and Luigi. Probably why Sega made Tails... oh well. Then 2nd, a revolutionary 2-player split screen was made, even if it is slow-down prone. And the legendary Death Egg storyline made Sonic games seem more sci-fi-ish, and gave it a better story. The story to Sonic 2 is that Dr. Robotnik got real pissed off, and decided to build the "Death Egg" and try to take over the world. Of course he had to capture animals again, making Sonic even more pissed, so he goes after him. He meets Tails on a different island, and Tails follows him around, facinated by Sonic's speed. Tails I guess figured out how to run real fast by twirling up his Tails, then letting them go to make his 2 Tails seem like propellers. And so they both go after Robotnik and try to foil his plans, blah blah blah, you know the rest.

Graphics

The graphics in Sonic 2 are so much better then Sonic 1. I especially like the improvements in the sprite. Much more smooth movements on Sonic and the backgrounds run seamlessly. This makes Super Mario World cry in every respect. The 2-player looks good yes, but its very slow-down prone. But it doesn't detract too much from the gameplay. The Special Stages looks good as well. For 1992 standards, (and today's) I'll give it a 10/10. Its still one of the absolute best looking Genesis/Megadrive games.

Sound

The sound is pretty good, although it isn't the best. The music is 16bit, but still catchy. The sfx are well... the same as Sonic 1's in almost every aspect. That isn't bad... no... but I still would like more sounds, like the sound of Tails flying in... have Sonic's plane, the Tornado make some sound too. For god sakes! Its a plane! Overall, it isn't too bad. 8/10

Gameplay

Yeah. Its Sonic. This game is still one of the most fun games I've played. It isn't up to par with my favorite Sonic game, Sonic CD, but its still awesome. No denying that. And being able to play as either Sonic or Tails, or have both Sonic and Tails on the screen and have a friend (as Tails) try to keep up with you when you're Sonic. 2 player adds more to that aspect. Too bad you can only play in 4 levels in the game...

The Special Stage is really the 1st good special stage in the Sonic series. You have to run down a 3-D pipe collecting rings, trying to get the required amount of rings before you get to the checkpoint. Its fun, and not bad looking neither :) 10/10 for gameplay.

Replay

With the 2-player mode, and great level design, you'll want to play it over and over. 10/10

Bottom Line

This is one of the best Sonic games. Nuff' said. 10/10 I still think Sonic CD is better tho. ^^
