Sonic the Hedgehog: The game that started one of the best long running series out there. This game might be somewhat old to today's standards, but hell, it never will grow old in my book.

Sonic the Hedgehog originally came out in 1991. (It has had several re-releases, like Sonic Jam and Sonic Mega Collection.) It came out to help Genesis, or Megadrive, go against the recently released Super Nintendo with Super Mario World.

And when it came out, it sparked a revolution in gaming at the time with awesome graphics, great music and sounds, and the speed and level design.

Oh, and the story... well... I don't have a manual for this game, which sux. Oh well. I do know that this story is NOT complicated. Really, the story is that Robotnik has come and stolen all of Sonic's animal friends, and made them into robots. You have to control Sonic and save all his friends from Evil Robotnik.(Later in the series, Sonic Team worked harder on the storyline, guess it didn't matter too much in this game.) Thats about it for the story. Not very complicated, aye?

Lets start with Graphics. Obviously, the graphics are nothing compared to today's standards. But remember, this game came out in 1991. So really, the graphics were rather good. (Most of the Genesis games at that time didn't look... well... great.) So I'd give the graphics a 9/10 due to it still not looking as good as Super Mario World.

The sound is awesome. I still like the music to this day. It all fits to where you are in the game and I just can't much wrong with it at all, although it isn't CD quality sound. Its still catchy. The sound is pretty good, but really, it seemed pretty average to other games at the time. 9/10

And The gameplay. The gameplay is like... still great to this day. Very simplistic, but still very sweet. The level design is still good, surpassing alot of games even nowadays. (Yes, the gameplay is the thing about Sonic games. You'll hear alot of praise from me about it.) There isn't much else to say here, just go and try it out. 10/10

The only problem with the game is that there is no 2-player mode or any extras. All the game is revolving around the original game, and thats it. But... the levels are still fun even if you pass them 400 times or so. The game just doesn't get old. So... I'd give replay value a 7/10

The bottom line is... well.. Its awesome. I can't say really any bad things about this game due to it being a classic and me loving old skool games. I'll give this game a 8/10, an 8 because its just not near as good as the other Genesis Sonic games out there like Sonic 2 or 3, but its good anyways.
